Experimental and simulation investigations on perforation of titanium alloy plates against armor-piercing projectile at oblique impacts

Abstract Titanium alloy is an advanced lightweight armor material, widely used in armored vehicles. Experimental and simulation investigations on perforation of titanium plates impacted by armor-piercing projectiles were performed this study. The critical ricochet angle failure morphology 6 mm, 8 10 mm 12 subjected to obtained. Simultaneously, Numerical simulations the oblique then high-performance computer using explicit finite element code LS-DYNA, validity numerical model was verified comparing with experimental results. Furthermore, typical process projectile penetration into target plate analyzed influence factors such as inclination thickness ballistic performance discussed.
